Houston Area Emergency Managers Receive C.E.M. ® Credential
Richmond, TX - Sixty-one candidates have been approved by the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) Certification Commission to receive the Certified Emergency Manager® (CEM®) credential. The CEM® designation is the highest honor of professional achievement available from the IAEM, which has in its membership more than 3,200 emergency managers representing local, state, and federal government; private industry; and military emergency managers. The new class of CEM® recipients join the 1,114 other emergency managers who were approved for the designation since January, 1993, bringing the total number of Certified Emergency Managers® to 1,175.
Houston Area Emergency Managers receiving the designation include Jeff Braun, Emergency Management Coordinator, Fort Bend County; Douglas Havron, Administrative Director, Southeast Texas Trauma Regional Advisory Council; Terry Moore, Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator, City of Houston; Sharon Nalls, Emergency Management Coordinator, City of Houston; James Palmer, Assistant Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator, City of Houston; Lori Upton, Assistant Director/Emergency Management Coordinator, Texas Children's Hospital.
IAEM administers the program for the profession, and policy decisions and judgments are made by a Commission of 19 respected professionals in the field. The Commission met March 26-27, 2008 and approved applicants who successfully completed an extensive credentials package, a management essay, and a written examination. The credentials requirements include experience, references, education, training, and contributions to the profession. The essay requires respondents to submit a response to a scenario they might face while fulfilling emergency management responsibilities. To maintain certification, those holding the CEM® designation must submit a total of 500 points covering Education and Instruction, Participation, and Service and Leadership to the profession every five years.
"I am extremely proud of the professional accomplishments of these area emergency managers," states Robert Hebert, County Judge of Fort Bend County. "It is impressive to have ten percent of the designees be from the Houston area. These individuals are a credit to their organizations, all who are actively working to enhance our regional capacity to prevent, respond, and recover from acts of terrorism and other disasters, whether natural or man-made." Judge Hebert currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Houston Urban Area Working Group---- a coalition of Houston local governments who are actively involved in bettering the Houston area's strategies for crisis response.
All sixty-one recipients will be recognized at the 56th IAEM Annual Conference, to be held November 16-19, 2008, Overland Park, Kansas.
